New Labour Codes Implemented, Reducing Gratuity Eligibility to One Year
The new labour codes, effective Friday, introduce significant changes for workers in India. Fixed-term employees will now be eligible for gratuity payments after one year of continuous service, down from five years. A national minimum wage will apply to all workers, expanding coverage beyond select industries. The codes also define gig and platform work and mandate annual medical checkups for workers over 40. Employers must issue written appointment letters and ensure timely salary payments, with IT firms required to pay by the 7th of each month. The reforms aim to enhance safety standards, expand social security benefits, and allow women to work night shifts in hazardous sectors, subject to consent and safety measures.
