UN Reports Nearly 250 Missing After Rohingya Refugee Boat Capsizes
Approximately 250 individuals, primarily Rohingya and Bangladeshis, are missing after a boat capsized in the Andaman Sea. The United Nations reported that the vessel, which departed from Bangladesh and was headed to Malaysia, sank due to adverse weather and overcrowding. On April 9, a Bangladesh-flagged ship rescued nine survivors who had been adrift for nearly two days. The survivors reported seeing around 100 others before losing contact. The Rohingya community has faced ongoing violence and poor living conditions, prompting dangerous sea journeys in search of safety. The UN agencies have called for sustained international support for Rohingya refugees and highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of their displacement.
