Assam Police Seize 37 Kg Gold, Largest Ever in State

On June 29, Assam police seized 37 kilograms of pure gold bars valued at approximately ₹55 crore in Guwahati, marking the largest single gold seizure in the state's history. The arrested individual, Akshay Parsuram Bansode, 32, from Maharashtra, had been posing as a disabled beggar while allegedly transporting the contraband. Investigations suggest a link to an international smuggling network extending to Myanmar, with the Northeast emerging as a key transit corridor for gold smuggling due to its porous borders. The seizure highlights a shift from air to land routes for smuggling operations, as stricter airport checks have made air transport riskier for syndicates. The gold was reportedly destined for major Indian markets, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
