CPI(M) Seeks Inquiry into Student Suicides at NIT Kurukshetra

CPI(M) leader John Brittas has called for urgent intervention from Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding a series of student suicides at NIT Kurukshetra. Four BTech students reportedly died by suicide between February 16 and April 16, with a recent suicide attempt by a 19-year-old student. Brittas urged the formation of an independent panel to investigate these incidents and review the institute's support systems. Following the incidents, NIT Kurukshetra transferred two professors and ordered approximately 5,500 students to vacate hostels by April 19. The institute has also established a five-member committee to investigate the suicides and three additional committees to address student issues. The recent events have raised concerns about student safety and institutional responses, prompting scrutiny of mental health support systems.
