IMD Forecasts 90% Monsoon Rainfall, Northeast Expected to Fare Better
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its monsoon forecast, predicting that India will receive 90% of its long-period average (LPA) rainfall during the Southwest monsoon season. This is a slight downgrade from the earlier estimate of 92%. While Northeast India is expected to receive normal rainfall, other regions, including Central and South Peninsula India, may experience below-normal precipitation, with forecasts indicating less than 94% of LPA. The monsoon core zone, critical for rain-fed agriculture, is also likely to see below-normal rainfall. The Southwest monsoon is vital for India's agriculture and economy, impacting millions who depend on seasonal rains. Meanwhile, parts of Delhi-NCR experienced rain and thunderstorms, providing relief from heat, with wet conditions expected to continue until 31 May.
