India to Build Three More Kalvari Class Submarines at ₹33,000 Crore

The Indian government has approved the construction of three additional Kalvari class submarines at Mazagon Dockyards Limited, with support from the French Naval Group. The estimated cost for this project is ₹33,000 crore. This decision aims to address declining force levels of diesel-attack submarines, particularly as Pakistan is set to acquire eight Type 039 Yuan class submarines by 2028-2030. Currently, India has six Kalvari class submarines, and the new submarines will feature advanced technology, including NATO standard torpedoes and the potential for Lithium Ion Batteries. The project is expected to enhance India's submarine capabilities and technical skills in shipyards, while also allowing for future leasing opportunities to allied nations.
