UN Report: 2.5 Million Indians at Risk of Poverty Due to Conflict

The United Nations estimates that 2.5 million people in India could fall into poverty due to military escalation in West Asia. The report indicates that India's poverty rate may rise from 23.9% to 24.2%, increasing the total number of impoverished individuals from approximately 351.6 million to 354.0 million. The conflict is projected to cost the Asia-Pacific region up to USD 299 billion, with South Asia facing the largest share of the impact. The report highlights significant disruptions in trade and supply chains, particularly affecting sectors reliant on imports from West Asia. Employment risks are pronounced in micro, small, and medium enterprises, which may experience higher input costs and supply shortages. Additionally, rising costs for medical devices and medicines are anticipated due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
