Protests and Shutdowns Disrupt Life in Manipur After Child Deaths

Protests erupted in Manipur following the deaths of two children in a blast on April 7 and a civilian convoy attack on April 18, leading to widespread shutdowns. The women’s group Meira Paibis initiated a five-day shutdown in the valley, while the United Naga Council called a three-day shutdown in the hills. Educational institutions, markets, and public transport were affected across valley and hill districts. Clashes between protesters and security forces resulted in three deaths and numerous injuries. The state government has decided to hand over both cases to the National Investigation Agency. Manipur has experienced ongoing ethnic violence since May 2023, resulting in over 260 fatalities and thousands displaced.
