Security Forces Prevent Communal Clash in Manipur Amid Ethnic Tensions
On July 11, 2026, security forces in Manipur intervened to prevent a potential communal clash involving about 600 individuals from the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district. The mob attempted to advance towards the Kanto Sabal area in the Meitei-majority Imphal West district, targeting an alleged illegal block. While security forces successfully pushed back the crowd, locals reported that at least three abandoned houses were burned. The ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has escalated tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities. Additionally, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that two suspects were arrested in connection with the abduction and killing of six Liangmai Nagas, further highlighting the region's instability.
