Kuki woman dies after gang-rape; no arrests made in case
A 20-year-old Kuki woman died on January 11 at a government hospital in Churachandpur, nearly two years after she was allegedly gang-raped during ethnic violence in Manipur. The woman, who was 18 at the time of the assault on May 15, 2023, had been receiving treatment for severe injuries and psychological trauma. Her family reported that no arrests have been made in her case, which was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The FIR, filed on July 21, 2023, remains pending, and her death highlights the ongoing issue of uninvestigated sexual violence amid the conflict that has resulted in over 258 deaths and 60,000 displacements since May 2023. Kuki organisations have called for accountability and justice for the woman and others affected by the violence.
