Karnataka Tests Reveal Ethanol in Petrol Exceeds E20 Limit

Updated 1 day ago: The Karnataka government has accused oil marketing companies of supplying petrol with ethanol content exceeding the 20% limit, raised concerns about potential damage to vehicles, demanded action against OMCs, and empowered officials to address malpractices, while no immediate response has been received from the companies.

The Karnataka government has accused major oil marketing companies (OMCs) of supplying petrol with ethanol content exceeding the 20% limit, with tests showing levels as high as 31.2%. Samples from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) recorded ethanol contents of 31.2% and 30.5%, respectively. The state has raised concerns about potential damage to vehicles, noting that 99% of India's 35 crore vehicles are not designed for ethanol blends above 20%. Karnataka has demanded action against OMCs, compensation for affected consumers, and mandatory disclosure of ethanol blend percentages at fuel stations. The state government has empowered officials to address malpractices in fuel supply under existing regulations. No immediate response has been received from the oil marketing companies regarding these allegations.
