Political Outrage Over Centre's Chandigarh Amendment Bill Proposal

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and SAD's Harsimrat Kaur Badal opposed the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed at bringing Chandigarh under Article 240, during a political uproar on November 23, 2025. The bill, set for introduction in Parliament on December 1, would grant the President regulatory powers over the Union Territory. Chandigarh, serving as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, has long been a contentious issue, with Punjab leaders asserting its rightful claim. The proposed amendment has drawn criticism from AAP, Congress, and SAD, who accuse the BJP-led Centre of undermining Punjab's identity and rights. An emergency SAD meeting is scheduled for November 24 to strategise against the bill.
