Justice Surya Kant Sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice of India
Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday. Appointed on October 30, he will serve for nearly 15 months, until February 9, 2027. Justice Kant has been involved in significant rulings, including the abrogation of Article 370 and the Pegasus spyware case. He previously served as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and has a notable academic background, having graduated first in his Master’s degree in law from Kurukshetra University in 2011. His tenure is marked by emphasis on gender justice and grassroots democracy, including directives for women's representation in bar associations and reinstating a woman sarpanch. Justice Kant succeeds Justice BR Gavai, who demits office on the same day.
