June CPI Inflation Hits 4.4%, Exceeding RBI Target for First Time in 17 Months

India's retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), reached 4.4% in June, surpassing the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) target of 4% for the first time in 17 months. This increase is attributed to rising fuel prices amid the ongoing West Asia conflict. Core inflation rose to 4.1%, while non-core inflation, which includes food and fuel, increased to 4.9%. Food and beverages inflation was recorded at 5.3%. Petrol prices in major cities were 6.9%-7.8% higher compared to the previous year, with petrol inflation at 7.5%, and diesel prices were up 7.7%-8.7%, leading to diesel inflation of 8.4%. Despite this rise, overall inflation remains within the RBI's tolerance band of 2%-6%.
