PMJDY Achieves 590 Million Accounts, ₹3.16 Lakh Crore Deposits
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has opened 590 million bank accounts since its launch on August 28, 2014, with total deposits reaching ₹3.16 lakh crore. Approximately 78% of these accounts are held in rural and semi-urban areas, and 56% of account holders are women. The scheme, which ensures access to basic bank accounts with zero balance requirements, has shifted focus to include every unbanked adult since August 2018. PMJDY has facilitated Direct Benefit Transfers, enhancing financial inclusion and providing insurance coverage to millions in the unorganised sector. It has been instrumental in creating the JAM (Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-mobile) trinity, streamlining subsidy delivery and reducing corruption.
