Jaishankar Critiques UN's Irrelevance Amid Global Crises
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that the United Nations has become 'largely irrelevant' due to a 'gridlocked' Security Council. Speaking at the 5th Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi, he highlighted the UN's failure to effectively address major conflicts, including those in the Gulf, Ukraine, and Africa, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. Jaishankar noted that the Security Council's structure does not reflect the current geopolitical landscape, as it has only 15 members, including five permanent members with veto powers. He emphasized the need for reform to enhance representation for developing countries and Africa. India's push for reform is part of its broader strategy to secure a permanent seat on the Security Council and advocate for the interests of the Global South. The G4 grouping has also renewed calls for reform during the ongoing UN General Assembly session.
