Iran Faces Leadership Uncertainty After Khamenei's Death

Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on 28 February, Iran is experiencing leadership uncertainty. Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as the new Supreme Leader but has not appeared in public, raising questions about the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' influence. A New York Times report claims Israel attempted to reinstall former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's leader, allegedly providing him with financial support and facilitating meetings with Israeli operatives. The operation to relocate Ahmadinejad on 28 February reportedly failed, as he expressed disillusionment with the plan. Ahmadinejad, who served as president from 2005 to 2013, has been out of power since 2013 and was disqualified from contesting the presidential election in June 2024 after Khamenei's death.
