Eisenkot tasked with forming Israel's next government after election stalemate

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has appointed Gadi Eisenkot to form the next government, following the October 27 election that resulted in no clear majority. Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party, has 28 days to build a coalition with at least 61 of the Knesset's 120 seats. He has secured support from parties representing 67 lawmakers, compared to 46 for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc, which holds 53 seats. Eisenkot has ruled out forming a government with Arab-led parties, which could provide him with a majority. If he fails to form a government, Herzog may nominate another candidate, potentially leading to another election within 90 days. Netanyahu has called for a national unity government, warning against alliances with Arab parties.
