INS Mahendragiri Commissioned as India's Sixth Indigenous Stealth Frigate
The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth indigenous stealth frigate under Project 17A, into its Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the ceremony. Mahendragiri, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, is the fourth of the Nilgiri-class frigates and incorporates advanced features such as stealth technology and automation. The ship has over 75% indigenous content and supports various maritime missions, including anti-air and anti-submarine operations. Its construction involved numerous Indian industries, contributing to the domestic defence sector. The commissioning of Mahendragiri enhances the Indian Navy's operational capabilities and underscores India's growing role in indigenous warship manufacturing.
