Indonesian ATR 42-500 Aircraft Missing, Wreckage Found in Mountains
An ATR 42-500 aircraft operated by Indonesia Air Transport went missing near Makassar on Saturday. The plane vanished from radar around 1:00 pm local time, approximately 20 km from the airport. Wreckage has been spotted on a mountain in Maros Regency, where search teams are deployed. The aircraft was on a flight from Yogyakarta to South Sulawesi's capital. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane after instructing it to correct its approach alignment. The local search and rescue agency, along with the air force and police, is involved in the ongoing search efforts. Indonesia relies heavily on air transport due to its vast archipelago geography, but the country has a history of aviation incidents.
