Indian States Request Additional Power Amid Nighttime Supply Shortages

Several Indian states, including Gujarat and Rajasthan, are seeking extra power allocations from the federal government to prevent outages as nighttime electricity supply tightens. The demand for power surged in September, leading to shortages of 560 million kilowatt-hours, the highest since August 2023. Weaker hydropower generation, down 20% from a year ago, and ongoing maintenance at coal plants have contributed to the supply issues. Approximately 41 GW of power plants are offline, and 47% of coal plants are at critical fuel levels. The federal government typically has access to 14 to 15 gigawatts for redistribution, but much has already been allocated, complicating the situation for states facing high industrial demand.
