India-US Trade Talks Reach Plateau, Negotiations Continue

Updated 22 hours ago: The new version includes specific figures for the trade surplus, mentions unresolved issues indicated by the US Trade Representative, emphasizes negotiations over tariffs, and clarifies that the interim bilateral trade agreement was not signed due to legal challenges.

India and the US are continuing trade negotiations, but both sides have reached a plateau, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that an agreement is not imminent, highlighting unresolved issues. Sitharaman noted that the balance of bilateral trade favours India, with a surplus of $34.4 billion in 2025-26, down from $40.89 billion in 2024-25. She emphasized that negotiations are preferable to tariffs for addressing trade imbalances, referencing significant trade deficits both countries have with China. The two nations had previously outlined a framework for an interim bilateral trade agreement, but it was not signed due to legal challenges in the US.
