India Lowers Monsoon Rainfall Forecast to 90% of Normal
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its monsoon rainfall forecast to below normal at 90% of the long period average (LPA), down from 92% previously. Rainfall is expected to be normal in Northeast India but below normal in Central, South Peninsular, and Northwest India. The LPA for monsoon rainfall from June to September is 87 cm. There is a 60% probability of a deficient monsoon, which may impact agriculture and water resources. Additionally, IMD warns of a hotter June, with above-normal heatwave days expected in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Vulnerable groups are at risk from prolonged heat exposure. State governments have been advised to prepare for these conditions, ensuring access to safe drinking water and cooling shelters.
