India to Mandate Isobutanol Blending with Diesel Soon

India is set to implement a mandate for blending isobutanol with diesel, aimed at enhancing energy security and reducing carbon emissions. V. Umashankar, secretary at the ministry of road transport and highways, announced that the mandate is expected to roll out later this year. Isobutanol, a biofuel derived from ethanol, has shown promising results in initial tests, significantly reducing pollution from diesel vehicles without requiring major engine modifications. Additionally, the ministry is exploring flex-fuel engines capable of running on up to 100% isobutanol. Plans are also underway to introduce a draft notification for truck trailers to support electric trucks, focusing on infrastructure for battery swapping and charging. Furthermore, hydrogen-powered public buses have been launched in Delhi, with plans for more refuelling stations along key corridors.
