India Protests After Indian Sailor Killed in Hormuz Missile Strike
The Indian government has initiated a 'Seafarer-First' response to enhance the safety of Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman. This decision follows the death of Indian seafarer Rohan Kumar during missile attacks on two Emirati oil tankers. The initiative aims to account for every Indian on vessels in the region, regardless of flag, and includes a real-time operational dashboard for monitoring vessel safety. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the government's commitment to the welfare of seafarers and their families, appointing liaison officers for support. The response comes amid escalating maritime tensions, with multiple Indian nationals injured in recent attacks. The government has activated a 24x7 grievance support system and directed vessels to conduct fresh threat assessments before sailing.
