India Needs 215 Multimodal Logistics Parks by 2047, Report Says

A report by CII and Knight Frank India indicates that India will require approximately 215 large multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs) by 2047 to enhance rail-based cargo movement. Currently, railways account for 27.4% of freight transport, with a target to increase this to 45%. Freight movement is projected to rise to about 28 billion tonnes annually by 2047. Presently, India has only 30 operational MMLPs, handling 129 million metric tonnes of cargo, which is just 2% of total freight. The report suggests that integrating MMLPs with dedicated freight corridors and improving first- and last-mile connectivity are essential for achieving these logistics goals. It also highlights that logistics costs have decreased from 13-14% of GDP a decade ago to about 10-10.5% in FY26, resulting in significant economic savings.
