India Explores Options to Maintain Chabahar Port Presence Amid Sanctions

India is considering strategies to sustain its involvement at Chabahar port due to US sanctions on Iran. A six-month exemption from these sanctions, granted by the Trump administration, is valid until April. The Indian government has committed $120 million for the port's development under a 10-year agreement signed in May 2024. All Indian officials on the board of India Ports Global Ltd have resigned to mitigate sanction exposure. Chabahar port is vital for India's connectivity with Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Russia, and is part of the International North-South Transport Corridor. Indian authorities assert that US tariffs on Iran trade, valued at $1.68 billion for 2024-25, will have minimal impact on India’s overall trade.
