US Senators Propose Sanctions Targeting Countries Buying Russian Energy
Four US Senators announced a push for legislation imposing sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil, natural gas, uranium, and petroleum products, which includes India. The proposed Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 could impose a 500% tariff on such purchases. The bill has garnered support from 84 senators and aims to penalize nations that continue to support Russia amid its actions in Ukraine. India has been specifically mentioned as a target, with Senator Lindsey Graham warning that continued purchases would have consequences. India had previously benefited from a US Treasury license allowing Russian energy purchases, but this license expired on June 17.
