India, Japan Strengthen Ties in Minerals, AI, and Defence Initiatives
India and Japan have announced new collaborations in critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and defence during a strategic dialogue in Tokyo. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi discussed initiatives aimed at economic security amid global challenges. A bilateral economic security initiative will facilitate private sector dialogues to address issues in critical minerals and energy. A joint working group on critical minerals is set to meet in early 2026, and an AI Dialogue will also be established. Defence cooperation includes Japan's technology transfer for the Unified Complex Radio Antenna system to the Indian Navy. The talks also covered investment, trade, and infrastructure projects, including the high-speed railway between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, with Japan providing Shinkansen technology.
