Institutes of National Importance Oppose Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill

Institutes of National Importance, including IITs and IIMs, have raised concerns over the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, currently under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee. They seek exemptions from several provisions aimed at centralising India's higher education regulatory framework. States governed by the NDA, such as Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, have also objected to the Bill's centralising aspects. The proposed legislation would repeal existing laws governing key educational bodies and establish a new apex body. Critics, including IIT Madras and the University of Hyderabad, argue that the Bill's provisions could undermine institutional autonomy and impose excessive penalties, with fines reaching up to ₹75 lakh. The Central Tribal University has warned that the penalty structure may adversely affect smaller institutions serving underserved areas.
