Humanoid Robots Successfully Perform Surgeries in Preclinical Trials
Researchers at the University of California San Diego have successfully conducted surgeries using teleoperated humanoid robots in a preclinical trial. Two surgeries were completed on large non-primate mammals, involving a human-robot team and a robot-robot team. The humanoid robots, named Surgie, stand about 5 feet tall and weigh around 60 pounds, significantly lighter than conventional systems. This technology could address surgeon shortages in rural areas by allowing expert surgeons to operate remotely. However, challenges such as longer operation times and latency issues remain. The technology is still in early stages, with further testing and regulatory approval needed before human clinical trials can begin.
