UN Climate Talks Stalled Over Fossil Fuel Roadmap Dispute

UN climate negotiations in Belem, Brazil, remain stalled as negotiators failed to agree on a draft proposal from the Brazil Presidency. Developed nations, including the EU, refuse to revisit finance discussions, asserting they were addressed at COP29 in Baku. The draft omits references to fossil fuel phaseout roadmaps, causing a divide between developed and developing countries. While Brazil supports including fossil fuel language, countries like China, India, and Russia oppose it. The draft acknowledges the need for a 43% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and aims to scale up climate finance to developing nations to at least $1.3 trillion annually by 2035. A two-year work programme on climate finance was established, responding to demands from developing countries, particularly India.
