India Implements New Labour Codes for Enhanced Worker Protections
India's new Labour Codes took effect on Friday, replacing 29 older laws. The four codes—Code of Wages, Industrial Relations Code, Code on Social Security, and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code—aim to improve worker welfare and standardise regulations. Key provisions include guaranteed minimum wages, social security for 40 crore workers, and equal pay for women. Fixed-term employees will now receive gratuity after one year, while gig workers will benefit from clearer definitions and social security contributions from aggregators. The reforms also mandate timely wage payments and improved safety measures across sectors, including for women and youth workers. These changes are part of a broader effort to modernise India's labour framework and enhance compliance for employers.
