Supreme Court Issues Guidelines to Combat Child Trafficking in India
The Supreme Court has established strict guidelines to address child trafficking in India, affirming that such acts violate children's fundamental rights. In 2022, approximately 3,098 children under 18 were rescued, while over 53,000 children were rescued from trafficking and child labour between April 2024 and March 2025. Despite these efforts, the conviction rate for trafficking offences was only 4.8% from 2018 to 2022. The court's guidelines emphasize the need to consider socio-economic vulnerabilities of victims, particularly from marginalized communities. The government is urged to enhance protections for children's rights and improve law enforcement responses to trafficking, aiming to create a deterrent effect against offenders.
