IAF Sets Record with IL-76MD Landing at Nyoma Airbase

An Indian Air Force IL-76MD aircraft has landed at Nyoma airbase, achieving a world record for the highest-altitude landing of its class at 13,629 feet. This milestone enhances India's strategic airlift capabilities and logistical reach near the Line of Actual Control with China. The IL-76MD, capable of transporting 40–45 tonnes of cargo, will improve troop and equipment movement to forward areas, reducing reliance on more distant airfields. The Nyoma airbase, located about 25 km from the LAC, has been upgraded to support military operations. Despite this achievement, challenges remain for India's ageing transport fleet, which includes 17 IL-76 aircraft acquired between 1985 and 1989, amidst ongoing discussions for fleet replacement.
