India Enhances Security in Siliguri Corridor with Underground Infrastructure
India is fortifying the Siliguri Corridor, a crucial 22 km land link between mainland India and the Northeast, by developing underground military infrastructure. Plans include a 40-km underground railway corridor and 12 underground ammunition storage facilities. The Army aims to establish five underground command centres and 21 surface firing positions. Additionally, the Air Force Station Hasimara, operational since July 2021, enhances air power in the region. The government is also investing ₹18,662 crore in a new four-lane road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra to improve connectivity. These initiatives address vulnerabilities highlighted during the 2017 Doklam standoff and aim to ensure secure access to the Northeast while reducing dependence on a single route.
