Health Insurance Coverage in India Surges to Over 60%

The National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) reveals that over 60% of Indian households are now covered by health insurance or financing schemes, a significant increase from 41% in NFHS-5. Rural households lead with 62% coverage, while urban areas report 56.4%. The survey, conducted by the International Institute for Population Sciences, included data from over 679,000 households between 28 May 2023 and 31 December 2024. The report also highlights rising health issues, with 30.7% of women and 27.3% of men classified as overweight or obese. Institutional births increased from 88.6% to 90.6%, and full vaccination coverage for children aged 12 to 23 months rose from 83.8% to 87.1%. The rotavirus vaccine coverage more than doubled from 36.4% to 85.4%, indicating improvements in childhood health.
