Supreme Court Mandates Timely Bail Rulings for High Courts

The Supreme Court has directed all high courts to decide bail applications within 24 hours of hearing and set a three-month limit for reserved judgments. This ruling aims to enhance judicial efficiency and address delays affecting personal liberty. The court invoked Article 142 of the Constitution to establish a nationwide framework for timely judicial processes. It also introduced measures for automated monitoring of pending judgments and reassignment of cases from judges who fail to meet deadlines. The judgment applies to various urgent cases, including habeas corpus petitions and educational admissions. Additionally, the court mandated that reasoned judgments must be uploaded within 15 days, with automated notifications sent to involved parties. This decision follows concerns over prolonged delays in judicial proceedings, particularly in criminal appeals.
