Villagers Oppose Solar Project Near Ramsar Site in Gujarat
Residents of 16 villages in Gujarat's Kachchh district are protesting a proposed solar project by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, which spans approximately 4,500 acres. The project is located near the Chhari Dhand wetland, designated as a Ramsar site in January, which is critical for local biodiversity and migratory birds. The Maldhari community, primarily pastoralists, fears losing their grazing land and livelihoods, as over 5,000 camels and numerous buffaloes depend on the grasslands. Local officials have acknowledged the villagers' concerns, but preliminary construction has already begun. Conservationists argue that the project could disrupt the fragile ecosystem and threaten local wildlife.
