Trade Unions Oppose New Labour Codes, Announce Nationwide Protest

Ten central trade unions have condemned the government's notification of four new labour codes, calling it a 'deceptive fraud' and announcing a nationwide protest on November 26. The unions argue that the codes, effective from November 21, are anti-worker and undermine welfare. The codes replace 29 central labour laws and include provisions for universal minimum wages, social security for gig workers, and gender-neutral pay. The government claims the reforms modernise the labour framework and strengthen worker rights. Unions have previously protested against these changes, alleging that consultations were ignored and that the codes cater to employer interests amid rising unemployment and inflation.
