CISF Designated as Security Regulator for 250 Indian Seaports
The Union Government has appointed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as the security regulator for over 250 seaports in India, as announced on November 21, 2025. Initially, 80 seaports handling cargo will be managed by CISF, which will oversee access control, cargo screening, and seafront patrolling. Currently, security at many ports is managed by private agencies and local police. The CISF estimates that 800-1,000 personnel are needed for each port and has requested 10,000 additional personnel for deployment. This decision follows a comprehensive study by a Joint Committee on port security and aligns with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2023. A hybrid security model will be implemented, with CISF handling core functions and state police or private agencies managing non-core tasks.
