CISF to Oversee 1,200 Fishing Harbours for Coastal Security
The Union Home Ministry plans to bring around 1,200 fishing harbours and landing sites under the oversight of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to enhance coastal security. This initiative follows the CISF's assignment of security duties at approximately 250 sea ports. The CISF will develop a security framework to assist local administrations, including biometric attendance systems and smart ID cards for fisherfolk. Currently, there are 1,547 notified fish landing centres and harbours across 13 coastal states and Union Territories. The move aims to address gaps in coastal security, especially after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, which highlighted vulnerabilities in maritime security. The CISF is already responsible for securing all major seaports in India, which has a coastline of 7,516 km.
