India's Gig Workforce Expected to Reach 2.5 Crore by 2030

India currently has approximately 1 crore gig workers, with projections indicating this number could rise to 2.5 crore by the end of the decade. The Labour Ministry is consulting with fund managers to establish social security schemes for these workers. All gig platforms are required to update worker details on the e-Shram portal by June 22. The government has notified the Code on Social Security, operationalising mechanisms like the National Social Security Board for gig workers. The e-Shram portal aims to enhance benefit portability for workers. Experts note that India's platform economy has shifted from the margins to mainstream economic activity, presenting new opportunities for income and flexibility.
