Government Plans Expansion of BSF's Operational Mandate for Border Security

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced plans to expand the Border Security Force's (BSF) operational mandate during a visit to Gujarat's Kutch district on May 29, 2026. The government aims to introduce a new paradigm of 'territorial security' alongside conventional border security. Shah reported that approximately 70% of the work to secure vulnerable sections along the Harami Nala and Sir Creek areas bordering Pakistan is complete. The initiative, part of the 'Smart Border Security' project, involves significant investment and aims to establish a comprehensive security grid across India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The government is also considering assigning new sectors to the BSF to enhance its operational capabilities. Shah is on a tour to review security arrangements and interact with BSF personnel, with plans to visit the Bangladesh border starting June 5.
