Gauhati HC Seeks Government Responses on Flood-Related Mining Allegations
The Gauhati High Court has requested replies from the Assam and Nagaland governments regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that links illegal mining to the recent floods in Sivasagar. The PIL, filed by Debabrata Saikia, claims that unscientific coal mining in Nagaland and illegal sand extraction in Assam exacerbated the floods that resulted in over 80 deaths and displaced thousands. The court has set a deadline of November 3 for responses and has raised concerns about the effectiveness of flood-control measures. Saikia's petition also calls for a high-powered committee to investigate the floods and seeks compensation of ₹10 lakh for each affected family. Additionally, it demands legal action against those responsible for illegal mining and negligence.
