On August 27, 2026, unidentified gunmen ambushed travellers on a road between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga villages in Kangpokpi district, resulting in the deaths of four Naga civilians. The attack occurred around 8.30 a.m. as the victims were en route from Makui to Senapati. The deceased have been identified as Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Anil Wijunamai, and Wisobou Charenamai. One individual, Japou M.K., is reported missing, and Gaikamang Ringkangmai sustained injuries. This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by the Manipur government to restore peace in the region, which has been affected by ethnic violence since May 3, 2023. The Imphal-Guwahati bus service has recently resumed after a three-year blockade along National Highway-2, which traverses Kuki- and Naga-inhabited areas.
