FATF Reports India Rescued 6,998 Nationals from Scam Compounds
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) reported that India's cyber-crime centre successfully geo-located a scam compound in Cambodia, leading to the rescue of 81 Indian nationals. The report highlights the rapid expansion of the 'industrial-scale scam compound model' in Southeast Asia since 2020, resulting in annual losses estimated in the tens of billions of US dollars. Between 2022 and 2025, 6,998 Indian nationals were rescued from scam compounds in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. Recruitment fees of ₹50,000 to ₹70,000 contributed to debt bondage, with victims often lured by fake job offers. The FATF emphasized the role of India's Cyber Crime Co-ordination Centre (I4C) in combating these scams and facilitating inter-state law enforcement coordination.
