Former CJI Advocates for Bail as a Right in India

Former Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud stated that bail before conviction should be a right, especially if a speedy trial is not feasible. Speaking at the Jaipur Literature Festival, he highlighted the case of activist Umar Khalid, whose bail plea was denied by the Supreme Court in January. Chandrachud noted that over 24,000 bail applications were disposed of during his tenure, but expressed concern over the high number of cases reaching the Supreme Court, which handles approximately 70,000 cases annually. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of cases involving national security and suggested reforms to enhance transparency in judicial appointments.
