EU Probes Spanish Rail Network After Fatal Train Crash

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is investigating Spain's rail network following a high-speed train crash that killed at least 69 passengers last month. The probe focuses on potential fraud related to EU funds for safety upgrades on the Madrid-Seville line. Investigations have been conducted at the railway infrastructure manager, the railway safety agency, and the court of auditors. This incident marks the second fatal crash in Spain this year, prompting the resignation of Transport Minister Oscar Puente. The EPPO had previously investigated the rail network after a January crash in Adamuz that resulted in 46 deaths. The recent crash has raised concerns about rail safety and maintenance in Spain.
