Election Commission Faces Scrutiny Amid Disagreements Among Commissioners

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is under scrutiny due to protests calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and reported disagreements among its three members over electoral roll decisions. If all three Election Commissioners disagree and cannot reach a majority decision, no resolution will occur, as stipulated by law. Recent reports indicate that two Commissioners raised objections 14 times in the past 10 months regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The ECI maintains that differing views are part of its deliberative process. Section 18 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023, mandates that decisions should ideally be unanimous or resolved by majority, but does not address scenarios of complete disagreement among Commissioners.
